Freehand Machinery

Over the holiday I decided to have a go at some free hand machining. I admire artists such as Katie Essam a great deal and thought I would create some pieces of my own. Here is my Paris inspired piece. Lots of small pieces of fabric, french knots and very untidy machining. Im really very happy with it and aim to demonstrate the technique to my year 9's next year. The possibilities are endless.

Have a go at something new this week, you never know you might enjoy it.

Emily Thorpe's Peacock Samples

Here are some beautiful peacock inspired samples by Emily Thorpe in year 11. Emily has used paint, applique, reverse applique, couching and quilting. Her samples will be displayed on a hat for her final piece. I am very much looking forwards to seeing this. Well done Emily, keep up the good work.

Grace Price-Jones Mixed Media Year 9

Here is a stunning 'work in progress' piece I would like to share with you. Whilst the task was to demonstrate Applique and hand stitching Grace went one step further and demonstrated a variety of skills to create her 'woman piece' Grace used batik to create the outline of her woman, this demonstrated accuracy and is a good way to section areas of colour. Grace then used a variety of dyes for the colour and fabric pens for the detail. The mouth shows reverse applique and the headpiece demonstrated applique using a variety of felts, fabrics and hand stitches.

Truly creative and beautifully executed Grace. You are one talented young lady. Keep up the excellent work and finish this piece.

Tayla Pilsworth Applique Year 9

The year 9's have been looking at Applique recently in order to create an Applique cushion demonstrating Applique, Reverse Applique, a variety of hand stitching and attaching a zip.

Tayla has created a wonderful applique page backed up by a wide variety of research and designs. Here  are some examples of her applique samples. I can see a wide variety of hand stitching skills which have been neatly applied. I like Tayla's unique use of colour, the way she layers felt with multi colored stitching and the small details.

Excellent work as always Tayla. Well done. Miss M
